Troy will take on the New Mexico State Aggies for homecoming on, Saturday, Oct. 11.
The Trojans have yet to win a game, but are looking forward to trumping the Aggies for homecoming.
New Mexico State is 2-3 (1-0 Sunbelt) and averages over 400 yards of offense per game while Troy averages around only 330 yards per game.
If Troy looks to upset the Aggies then it will have to execute on offense as well as it did against ULM. Redshirt freshman quarterback Brandon Silvers had 270 passing yards against the Warhawks and continued to show improvements.
Silvers got rid of the ball much quicker and remained on target the majority of the time.
“Saturday night, every throw he made was pretty much on target,”said freshman wide receiver John Johnson.
However, Silvers wasn’t the only one who showed improvement on Saturday against the Warhawks; the Trojan defensive line showed huge steps of improving by holding ULM to only 29 rushing yards.
Redshirt freshman defensive end Jamal Stadom had seven tackles and two huge sacks. Stadom and the rest of the Trojan defense will have to show the same intensity against the Aggies if they look to win homecoming.
Another bright spot for the Trojans was senior wide receiver Chandler Worthy, who had six catches for 66 yards, including two touchdown catches. Junior wide receiver Bryan Holmes also had seven catches for 97 yards with one receiving touchdown.
The Troy wide receivers and Silvers really showed some of their offensive chemistry on Saturday and will have to continue that chemistry throughout the season.
New Mexico State does have a balanced offense though, so the Trojan defense will not only have to be successful at stopping the run, but also the passing game of the Aggies.
The Aggies are also very successful at converting on fourth down so the Trojans have to be prepared to stop them and get their own offense on the field.
One advantage that Troy has going into homecoming is that the Aggies have only made three sacks this season so the Trojans shouldn’t have to worry too much about the blitz.
Troy’s homecoming week could become magical if it can pull off its first win against a good New Mexico State team.
